Weight and Liquid Volume
How many ounces are in a pound?
Weight tells how heavy something is. In the United States, we often use ounces (oz) and pounds (lb). 16 ounces make 1 pound. A slice of bread weighs about 1 ounce, and a soccer ball weighs about 1 pound.
Scientists measure mass in grams (g) and kilograms (kg). A paper clip has a mass of about 1 gram. 1,000 grams make 1 kilogram.
Liquid volume tells how much liquid a container holds. 1,000 milliliters (mL) make 1 liter (L). A teaspoon holds about 5 milliliters, and a large water bottle holds about 1 liter.
To compare, use the same unit. 1 pound of feathers and 1 pound of rocks weigh the same, even though the feathers take up much more space.
